Shooting an Elephant

By George Orwell

  1. George was very courageous, because in the text he stated that he had to kill the elephant for the safety of others. he was more fearful of the elephant stampeding through the unarmed crowd of over 2,000 bystanders then for his own personal safety
  2. George was annoyed by all the locals, and the Buddhist priests especially, "there was several thousand of them in the town and none of them seemed to have anything to do except stand on street corners and jeer at Europeans".
  3. George was hateful towards his job and the British Empire. In the text George states, "all i Knew was that i stuck between my hatred of the empire i served and my rage against the evil-spirited little beasts who tried to make my job impossible".
  4. George was selfish, because the 2,000 locals behind him would have laughed and made fun of him even more if he did not shoot the elephant which was now calmly and peaceful eating in the field.
  5. in the end after its rampage the elephant was peaceful, as George stated in the text, "And at the distance peacefully eating, the elephant looked no more dangerous then a cow"
